Export insurance extension while your car waits in Norway
Waiting for an inspection or registration appointment in Norway? Extend the export insurance by 14 days at a time, from €120, online via WhatsApp, email or the form. You only pay after the insurer agrees.
The Norwegian part of an import rarely runs exactly to plan. Customs clearance at Tolletaten, a wait for an inspection or registration appointment at Statens vegvesen, or the payment of the one-off registration tax to Skatteetaten can easily take longer than the 14 days of your export insurance. Transport delays or a buyer who is not ready yet can add to that. You can then extend the cover without coming to our desk. This page explains how it works, what it costs and where its limits lie.
With an extension you receive a new Green Card, also as a PDF by email.
Extending export insurance at a distance, step by step
You send your request via WhatsApp, email or the form below.
We check it and ask the insurer for approval.
We confirm the approval and the price: from €120 per 14 days, more for heavy or unusual vehicles.
You pay by bank transfer, and the new insurance certificate with Green Card usually arrives by email within 15 minutes, including a PDF.
If the insurer does not agree, you pay nothing. You can extend more than once, 14 days at a time, each time after the insurer agrees. Insurance taken out elsewhere can also be extended with a connecting policy. At our desk in Hengelo it works too, and you then usually take the Green Card document with you within 15 minutes.
Details to send for an insurance extension
the registration number;
the current Green Card or policy, as a photo or PDF;
the end date of the current cover;
where the vehicle is now, and its destination;
the details of the policyholder and the driver.
The form has no upload field, so send photos and documents with the WhatsApp button next to the form, or by email. Clear photos of the Green Card or policy help us check the request.
When the export insurance has already expired
An extension can still be possible after the cover has ended, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK or technical inspection, and again only after the insurer agrees. Between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, the vehicle is not insured and must not be driven. That is why we advise applying on time, so the new cover follows on directly from the current one.
Export plates, APK and Norwegian rules: the limits
The extension covers the insurance only. The export plate itself is not extended: on Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration and never longer than the APK (the Dutch periodic roadworthiness test) is valid. Is the vehicle still in the Netherlands after those 14 days? Then it can only travel on a trailer or car transporter.
In Norway, Norwegian rules apply. After customs clearance a car may be driven for up to 30 days on valid foreign plates if it is insured and roadworthy. The rules for Dutch export plates vary by country, and whether white export plates count as valid foreign plates in Norway is unclear, so ask Tolletaten or Statens vegvesen first. Otherwise, use temporary plates (prøveskilt): NOK 340 per day according to Statens vegvesen, with third-party insurance included. The extension does not replace the Norwegian traffic insurance needed for registration either. More on Dutch export plates for Norway.
Timing the extension with inspection and registration in Norway
Book the inspection at Statens vegvesen as soon as the car has been cleared through customs. That avoids needless waiting, and it matters for the 13 weeks the Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax Administration) allows for registration if you want a refund of BPM, the Dutch registration tax. Background on the cover itself is on the export insurance page, and the Norwegian steps on importing a car into Norway.
Export insurance extension
from €120 per 14 days
14 extra days of third-party liability cover
New Green Card by email (PDF), usually within 15 minutes of payment
Request online, or at our desk
Also if your current export insurance was arranged elsewhere
Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.

Extending Green Card cover in Norway: your questions answered
Do my white export plates get extra days when I extend the insurance?
No. The extension covers the insurance only. On Dutch public roads the export plate remains valid for 14 days after deregistration and never longer than the APK. Abroad the rules for Dutch export plates vary by country, and in Norway the Norwegian rules apply.
Can you extend export insurance that I bought elsewhere?
Yes, with connecting cover of 14 days, after the insurer agrees. Send us the current Green Card or policy and the end date of the cover.
My cover has already expired. Is it too late to extend?
Not necessarily. An extension can still be possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK or technical inspection, again after the insurer agrees. Between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, the vehicle is uninsured and must not be driven.
Does the extension replace Norwegian traffic insurance?
No. To register the car in Norway you need Norwegian traffic insurance, which the insurer reports to Statens vegvesen electronically.
How quickly do I receive the new Green Card after paying?
Once we have confirmed the insurer's approval and the price, you pay by bank transfer. The new insurance certificate with Green Card then usually arrives by email within 15 minutes, as a PDF.
Starting prices, including VAT where applicable. Outside office hours, depending on the vehicle or for postal delivery the price can be higher; we always confirm it in advance. See all prices
